Seasons Change & So Should Your Skincare

Seasons Change & So Should Your Skincare

Let’s Talk Seasons

Seasonal changes are to be anticipated with appropriate changes made to your skincare regime. Some of these, which are accentuated further by those participating in outdoor sports, are listed below.

  • Winter: cold, dampness, dehydration, windburn, chapping, and increased sensitivity
  • Spring: sunburn, rain, and humidity changes.
  • Summer: heat, sweating, dehydration, sunburn, & exposure to different water sources while swimming.
  • Autumn sunburn and hyperpigmentation can become more apparent in the summer months due to changes in humidity and wind.
The Seasons of Life

Other changes to which individuals must adapt are the changing seasons of life. As someone approaches any major life changes, you should seek consultations to help with any adjustments that need to be made. Some life changes and things to look out for include

  • Teenage years—this is where acne can be at its most prevalent.
  • Pregnancy- hormonal fluctuations can cause breakouts, as well as melasma (hyperpigmentation).
  • Perimenopause & menopause- hormonal fluctuations can cause breakouts or acne on the skin as well as dryness, laxity wrinkling, and pigmentation irregularities.
  • Andropause (men)- sudden acceleration in wrinkling, laxity, pigmentation irregularities, dryness, and periorbital changes.
Advice During Skin Changes
As the skin cycles through changes meant to bring adaptation to seasonal events, it experiences stress. Its ability to function as a barrier to the environment and to remain healthy and beautiful is easily compromised. With the approach of any new season, it comes an excellent time to begin seasonal skincare changes by first having a consultation with your local iS Clinical partner. In the consultations, your clinician may focus on the stresses of the season to come, and evolving skin issues resulting from the transition from season to season. They may also consider any special events coming up and of course, they will always consider your skincare goals and personal lifestyle.

What Can You Anticipate?

Changes during each season can bring different skin concerns and it's important to anticipate some specific skin concerns could crop up.

  • Winter - dehydration, barrier impairment, sensitivity & the ‘winter itch’ (the skin can experience extreme sensitivity) & inflammation.
  • Spring - maintenance of your skincare and potentially a few tweaks for any developing issues.
  • Summer - inflammation, hyperpigmentation, barrier impairment related to water exposure.
  • Autumn - maintenance could be required and focus on potential developing issues.
