Menopause Awareness Day

Menopause Awareness Day

Introduction:

Menopause

Menopause Awareness Day occurs annually on the 18th of October, although awareness is spread continually throughout the month with the goal to break the stigma and highlight the resources available to improve health and wellbeing. By increasing awareness and knowledge we can better support ourselves, friends, family and colleagues.

So, what is menopause?

Menopause is a point in time 12 months after a woman’s last period. However, there are actually four stages until the transition through menopause is complete. During this time women can experience in their monthly cycles, hot flashes, skin changes, disrupted sleep, lower energy and mood. Most women experience the menopausal transition often begins between ages 45 and 55.

Whilst we experience physical and emotional symptoms, inside our body hormones such as estrogen and progesterone rapidly drop off leaving visible signs on the skin. During menopause our skin can appear dry and less plump, some women may even notice some inflammation, pigmentation, rosacea and acne. Loss of skin laxity and the appearance of lines and wrinkles can become more prevalent, unfortunately we lose 30% of our collagen in the first 5 years of menopause.

Dryness is one of the major skin problems associated with menopause and the main culprit of our skin looking a bit lack lustre. As our hormones crash it actually compromises our skin barrier, your skins frontline defence and leaves our cell turn over slow. This means our skin loses some of its ability to hold water leaving our skin to become dry and more wrinkled looking as a result. From around the age of 25 our cell turnover beings to slow, this is triggered by the decrease in collagen and elastin which are the pillars of healthy skin. Healthy cell turnover should average around 30 days before we turn 25, up until to the age of 40 it will take approximately 60 days, after 40 we are looking at 90+ days.

Although we can’t stop the clock, we can combat a lot of the skin changes from tailoring our skincare regimen. Great skin can be achieved the iS Clinical way, just 4 simple steps; cleanse, treat, hydrate and protect. Below are some staple products to keep your skin healthy, happy and glowing.
